What this code covers

Source · Editorial summary grounded in 3 cited references ↓

95972 covers checking and reprogramming an implanted neurostimulator for the spinal cord or a peripheral nerve when the programming is complex. Complex means more than three parameters were adjusted, such as amplitude, pulse width, frequency, electrode configuration, or cycling. One to three parameters is 95971, and analysis with no programming is 95970.

Many ortho spine groups refer stimulator patients to pain management, but groups with an in-house pain physician bill this for patients with persistent pain after lumbar surgery. The device rep may be in the room. Only the physician or qualified provider directing the programming can bill.

Count and document every parameter changed. Without that detail, auditors downcode to 95971. If a separate E/M service is provided the same day, it needs modifier 25 and its own documentation.

Work RVU vs. total RVU

The work RVU (0.8) is the surgeon's own effort — the figure physician pay and productivity targets are built on. The total RVU (1.79) adds practice overhead and malpractice, and is what drives the Medicare payment below.

Payment by site of service

Medicare pays different rates by setting. HOPD typically pays substantially more than ASC for the same procedure.
