Fibroblastic disorders
Fibroblastic disorders
M72 is a header (parent) code in the ICD-10-CM hierarchy. It is not billable for claim submission. Use one of the billable child codes listed below.
Billable codes in this category
Each of the codes below is billable. Choose the one that most accurately describes the patient's diagnosis.
Fibroblastic proliferation of the palmar fascia causing nodule formation, cord development, and progressive flexion contracture of one or more fingers — the defining features of Dupuytren's disease.
M72.1 captures fibroblastic thickening of the skin overlying the dorsal interphalangeal or metacarpophalangeal joints — the fibrous plaques clinically known as knuckle pads or Garrod's pads.
M72.2 covers fibroblastic thickening of the plantar fascia, encompassing both plantar fascial fibromatosis (Ledderhose disease, with palpable nodules) and the far more common plantar fasciitis.
M72.4 classifies pseudosarcomatous fibromatosis, a rapidly growing but benign soft-tissue lesion of fibroblastic origin — also captured under this code when the operative or pathology report uses the term nodular fasciitis.
M72.6 identifies necrotizing fasciitis — a rapidly progressing, life-threatening bacterial infection that destroys fascia and surrounding soft tissue, commonly driven by Group A Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, or polymicrobial flora.
M72.8 captures fibroblastic disorders of soft tissue that don't fit any named subcategory within M72, including non-specific fasciitis, abscess of fascia, and other infective fasciitis not classified elsewhere.
M72.9 captures a fibroblastic disorder of soft tissue that cannot be assigned to a more specific subcategory within M72 — functioning as the NOS (not otherwise specified) fallback when documentation identifies fasciitis or fibromatosis without naming the anatomic site or subtype.
